Can I still go to school next year...

Story behind the photograph: This afternoon I met a peasant woman. She had been beaten until her nose bled. When she saw me photographing in the fields, she came to find me. She was disabled and could not speak clearly in front of me; I could only hear her crying, a sound coming from deep inside. It was getting dark and I was ready to return, but I still wanted to go to her home and hear what had happened.

The family lived in about 40 square meters. It was very dark. There was a room with a mosquito net and a small bed, which she said was where her daughter slept. The place was too dark, and I had no flash, so I could not photograph it then. After returning to where I was staying, I still wanted to go back, so I took a lamp and went again. By then her daughter had come home.

She was such a good child. When she saw me, she cried. A year of school cost RMB 700, while the family's annual income was about RMB 1,000, earned by her father digging sand in the river. The family kept several pigs and had built a small pigpen by the roadside; the mother had been beaten until her nose bled, and the pigpen had also been destroyed. I asked how much it was worth. The mother said RMB 50. I comforted them and gave them RMB 100 so they could find a place to rebuild a pigpen.

I truly wished I could give this little girl the money she needed for school, but I did not have it with me. I hope my work can help more children go to school.

This story happened on Christmas Day last year. The girl's name is Wang Sha. She was 14 years old, studying in the second year of junior middle school at Huaiyuan Town Middle School in Yingjing County, Sichuan. Her father, Wang Guochang, was 61. A year has passed. I do not know whether young Wang Sha can still continue going to school.
