Natural habitat, not zoo imagery
The prefaces describe the album as showing giant pandas under natural conditions, fundamentally different from zoo or specimen images.
Published album proof / 1993
This feature treats the 1993 physical album itself as proof: cover, copyright pages, two prefaces, the artist's statement, and photographed interior spreads together show the album's publishing level, public evaluation, and print quality.
These facts provide verifiable publishing, evaluation, and circulation evidence for understanding Hou Yimin's position in the early history of Chinese wildlife photography, especially wild giant panda photography.
Foundational position
A photographer's historical position should be read through a chain of facts: fieldwork duration, documentation of real habitats, publishable bodies of work, public-institution evaluation, photographic authority evaluation, and entry into public circulation.
The prefaces describe the album as showing giant pandas under natural conditions, fundamentally different from zoo or specimen images.
Wu Yinxian's preface and the related archive together point to six years of work in the pandas' mountain homeland, six to eight hours of photography per day, and four narrow escapes.
The copyright page records formal publishing, distribution, plate-making, printing, and a 3,000-copy first print run.
Xiao Yang and Wu Yinxian evaluate the album from public, conservation, and photographic-art perspectives.

Copyright pages / physical proof
These are photographed copyright pages from the physical album, not compressed old-site viewing files. They list publisher, distributor, planners, editors, designers, translator, printer, format, sheets, print run, and impression date.
Two prefaces / bilingual extraction
The two Chinese prefaces are extracted into readable text with English translations beside them; photographed Chinese and English preface pages are kept for source verification.
Preface by Xiao Yang / Governor of Sichuan Province

The album Photograph Collection of Chinese Giant Pandas by the young photographer Hou Yimin is about to be published. It is, so far, the first work to introduce to people, through photographs, the varied states and behaviors of giant pandas under natural conditions. It fully reflects the author's love for nature and for giant pandas. The publication of this album will help people understand and love giant pandas; it will also benefit scientific research on giant pandas in biology, history, and nature conservation. It is therefore a matter of great significance.
The giant panda is a rare animal unique to China and one of the precious legacies remaining from nature. Giant pandas mainly live in western China, and Sichuan is their principal home for survival and reproduction. For this reason, protecting giant pandas is an unshirkable responsibility of the people of China and of Sichuan Province. We hope that, while this album allows more people to see the grace of giant pandas, it will also draw attention and support from countries around the world for their protection.
The publication of this album will deepen the world's understanding of Sichuan and play a positive role in Sichuan's broader opening-up and external development. On this occasion, I extend my highest respect to the author.

Preface by Wu Yinxian / Honorary Chairman of Chinese Photographers' Association

Photograph Collection of Chinese Giant Pandas by the young photographer Hou Yimin is a rare photographic album of precious wild animals.
The giant panda is our national treasure and a precious natural legacy for people throughout the world. Photographic albums portraying wild giant pandas are especially rare. The works photographed by the author may be called representative of the highest level of giant-panda photography in the world today. Their publication will give humanity a new understanding of the true life of giant pandas. They have high artistic and collecting value; each individual work is itself a precious work of art. Their appearance will also leave a new page in the history of nature conservation.
In the high mountain forests of the giant panda reserves, the light is dim, the climate harsh, and the roads dangerous. To make these photographs, the author endured great hardship and worked for six years in the mountains of the pandas' homeland, living with them day and night. He photographed six to eight hours every day, and sometimes went several days without making a picture with the desired mood and quality. To understand the lives of giant pandas and to discover their patterns of activity, he traveled in the wild for a long time and gave strenuous labor. Wild giant pandas are not gentle animals; photographing them at close range is extremely dangerous. To obtain these photographs, the author narrowly escaped death four times while being chased by giant pandas. These works are extremely precious. They were exchanged for the author's life and youth, and they are fundamentally different from photographs made in zoos or from panda specimens. The author devoted six full years to photographing giant pandas; that spirit is admirable.

Artist statement / June 1993
This page is not a copyright page, but it brings the publication into the artist's own voice. In the snow-mountain working photograph at lower right, the person in red is Hou Yimin himself, working in snowy mountain conditions while photographing wild giant pandas.
Life is valuable because there is love. For the sake of love, I go searching. What remains in memory is a beautiful dream. Toward the place where the sun rises, I go searching for that beautiful dream.

Interior pages / print quality
These photographs preserve paper reflection, black pages, spread relationships, and framed color plates. Their value is not just the panda image, but the layout, plate-making, and physical print texture of the 1993 album.
Fee / price / honors
The weight of a photographic album lies not only in the images, but also in how the publishing system treated them: whether the author was paid, whether the book carried a sale price, and whether it received honors and professional evaluation after publication. The physical book, copyright pages, two prefaces, first-impression record, and printed interior pages together show that Photograph Collection of Chinese Giant Pandas was not a temporary booklet, but a representative wild-giant-panda photographic work that entered formal publishing, distribution, and evaluation systems.
The author fee shows that the publisher treated Hou Yimin's six years of fieldwork as formal published content. It is not verbal praise, but an institutional recognition of the author's labor and the work's value.
The sale price shows that the album was issued to real readers and collectors. It moved wild-giant-panda photography from the field into bookstores, public reading, and the collecting market.
The prefaces by Xiao Yang and Wu Yinxian already evaluate the work within panda protection, Sichuan's opening-up, wildlife-photography history, and artistic collecting value. The honors further show professional recognition after publication.
Evidence chain
This is not an isolated cover image, but a complete set of physical evidence: publishing chain, distribution chain, first print run, authoritative prefaces, the artist's poem, the snow-mountain working photograph, black-ground interior pages, and records of author fee, sale price, and honors all point to the same conclusion: by 1993, Hou Yimin's wild-giant-panda photography had entered formal publishing and public circulation.
