Wenchuan earthquake / Representative work / Lele
Lele..."
This work is placed here on its own. It should not live only as a small image on the homepage or inside a grid; viewers need to face the image first, then enter the facts, testimony, and psychological cost behind it.
Note: this is one of the few representative works retained on the public site. The complete Wenchuan earthquake topic, parents' demonstration photographs, continuous field sequences, and sensitive materials are blocked from general public access.
Artist testimony: this is a close portrait of Lele's mother searching the ruins for her child. She was calling "Lele," her tears already exhausted. The photograph was not staged, directed, or invented; it came from a real site of life and death.
Facts / testimony / ethical frame
Pursue the facts; answer terror with the force of the human spirit.
This page does not cut away essential facts, and it does not turn pain into spectacle. It keeps the work, source, photographic responsibility, traumatic cost, and evidence boundaries together.
The project owner states that this body of work includes National Archives collection leads; the public page presents it as a collection lead without overstating documents not shown here.
Work status
The artist identifies this as one of the most visually forceful and representative close portraits in the Wenchuan earthquake project.
Not submitted
According to the artist, others suggested submitting the photograph to the World Press Photo competition and believed it could contend for a major award, but he did not submit it.
Collection lead
The artist states that the work was collected by the National Archives; he did not collect the certificate and did not accept the related payment. The public page presents this as the artist's oral-history and collection lead.
Traumatic cost
The artist recalls that an assistant misunderstood him as cold. Yet since childhood he had fled the sound of mourning music and could not bear to look at death. To complete the journalistic record, he had to face death, ruins, and families' grief for an extended period. Close recording was not coldness, but the burden of witness under immense psychological pressure.
