“最多与最少”不是数字游戏,而是侯一民摄影精神的两端。"Most and Least" is not a play on numbers, but the two poles of Hou Yimin's photographic spirit.

一端是自然中稀少、濒危、需要保护的生命;另一端是历史中数量最大、承受现实重压的人群。One pole is rare, endangered life in nature; the other is the largest human population under historical and social pressure.

一、大熊猫:森林中的 2000 天 I. Giant pandas: 2000 days in the forest

并不是每一个人都能寻找到生活的目标,体验生活的多样性。从我踏入那片神秘的森林开始,我生活的指标才真正指向太阳,我这才感受到生活远比文学作品更丰富与广博。因为有很多东西是用生命去写成的。

这一个个真实的故事,是我青春最辉煌的 6 年实践中的片断写实,它记载着生命之声。这些经历使我生命的意义得到无限的延伸。365 乘以 6,是我那最具活力的青春岁月,永远留在了那一片神秘的森林中。

我用照片来思考,我相信我的作品,我不需要驾驭文字,我只用我的心来说话。

Not everyone can find a goal in life or experience life's diversity. From the moment I entered that mysterious forest, the indicator of my life truly pointed toward the sun. Only then did I feel that life was far richer and broader than literature, because many things are written with life itself.

These true stories are fragments from the most brilliant six years of my youth. They record the voice of life. These experiences extended the meaning of my life infinitely. Three hundred sixty-five multiplied by six: the most vigorous years of my youth remain forever in that mysterious forest.

I think through photographs. I believe in my work. I do not need to control words; I speak with my heart.

二、《同在一个星球》:心灵、思想与使命 II. On the Same Planet: spirit, thought, and mission

艺术的最高目标是表现心灵的意境,或是伟大的思想,或人类热情的使命。

讲座材料评价《同在一个星球》:大熊猫屹立于“星球”之上,意味深长;从自然生命与宇宙的角度而言,它有丰富的内涵和广博的意蕴。这幅艺术作品思想的普遍性与艺术家创造的想象力孕育成的完美梦境,构成了它的艺术高度。

The highest goal of art is to express the landscape of the spirit, a great idea, or the passionate mission of humanity.

The lecture describes On the Same Planet as a meaningful image in which the giant panda stands upon a "planet." From the perspective of natural life and the universe, it carries rich content and broad resonance. The universality of the work's thought and the perfect dream shaped by the artist's imagination form its artistic height.

三、中国农民:十年自筹经费的摄影采访 III. Chinese peasants: ten years of self-funded photographic fieldwork

中国当代农民生存状态,是摄影家侯一民十年自筹经费对中国四川、江苏、重庆部分贫困山区的摄影采访记录。该专题获 2005 年平遥国际摄影节项目创作大奖,其中 38 幅作品被平遥国际摄影博物馆收藏。

讲座中列出多件收藏级肖像作品,包括《中国农民-卖菜所得》《中国农民-母亲》《中国农民-交税》《中国农民-买药老人》等,材料为纯棉无酸纸、收藏级艺术微喷,尺寸约 76 x 90 厘米。

The Living Conditions of Contemporary Chinese Peasants is Hou Yimin's ten-year, self-funded photographic investigation in poor mountainous areas of Sichuan, Jiangsu, and Chongqing. The project received the 2005 Pingyao International Photography Festival project creation award, and 38 works were collected by the Pingyao International Photography Museum.

The lecture lists multiple collection-level portraits, including Chinese Peasants - Vegetable Income, Chinese Peasants - Mother, Chinese Peasants - Paying Taxes, and Chinese Peasants - Elder Buying Medicine. The stated material is cotton acid-free paper with collection-grade fine-art inkjet printing, at roughly 76 x 90 cm.

四、采访文字:作品旁边的人声 IV. Interview text: voices beside the photographs

母亲:“我丈夫在北京建筑队找了个活,但是一年了一分钱都没有挣到,还欠了工头一笔食宿费。他连给我打电话的钱都没有。他病了想回家,可是我也没有钱寄给他……”

卖菜的老农:一天卖菜所得:12.5 元。

抓中药的老人:“病了几年了,前年医了 2000 元钱,借了一屁股债。没有钱了,无法医病了,很痛……”

放羊儿:摄影师:为什么不上学?放羊儿:爷爷不让去。摄影师:为什么爷爷不让去?放羊儿:要放羊。摄影师:你想不想去上学?放羊儿:想。

城市民工:“能走的少壮都出去谋生路了,剩下的老弱病残与乡镇干部应付着撕扯着。”

Mother: "My husband found work with a construction crew in Beijing, but after a whole year he has not earned a single cent. Instead, he owes the contractor money for food and lodging. He does not even have money to call me. He has fallen ill and wants to come home, but I have no money to send him..."

Elder selling vegetables: One day's income from selling vegetables: RMB 12.5.

Elder buying Chinese medicine: "I have been ill for several years. The year before last, treatment cost RMB 2,000, leaving me deeply in debt. I have no money now and cannot treat the illness. It hurts..."

Child shepherd: Photographer: Why aren't you in school? Child shepherd: Grandfather won't let me go. Photographer: Why not? Child shepherd: I have to herd sheep. Photographer: Do you want to go to school? Child shepherd: Yes.

Migrant worker: "Those young and strong enough to leave have all gone out to find a living. The old, weak, sick, and disabled are left behind, struggling and tearing against the township cadres."

五、孩子、医疗和税费 V. Children, medical care, and taxes

上学时间:“6 年前,我曾给胡总书记和温总理写过一封公开信,就我在农村采访的感受提出农村学龄儿童的营养改善倡议,终于在去年看到了中央开始实施‘农村义务教育学生营养改善计划’。”

孩子的劳动:摄影师问 14 岁以下的小孩每天干多少小时的活。孩子回答:“干到天黑就不干了。”摄影师问:“大人干什么,他们也干什么。每天超过八小时了哦?”孩子回答:“嗯,是。”

一个农村女孩的生日:“我的生日什么是都没有的,只有干活。我只知道我又大了一岁,就这样。”

83 岁老人:“我 83 岁了,儿女们都成家分过了。我一个人种 3 亩地。照相的,你说我还能活几年?几十年了,我没见过电灯,我没有钱牵电线。照相的,你不要照,我没钱。”

税费负担:讲座列出农民要交的 33 种税费,包括农业税、村提留、耕地占有费、土地承包税、教育附加费、计划生育费、儿童免疫费、集资建校费、合作医疗费、森林砍伐审批费、畜禽防疫费等。

School time: "Six years ago, I wrote an open letter to General Secretary Hu and Premier Wen. Based on what I felt during rural interviews, I proposed nutrition improvement for rural school-age children. Last year, I finally saw the central government begin implementing the Rural Compulsory Education Student Nutrition Improvement Program."

Children's labor: The photographer asked how many hours children under fourteen worked each day. The child answered: "We stop when it gets dark." The photographer asked: "So whatever adults do, they do too. More than eight hours a day?" The child answered: "Yes."

A rural girl's birthday: "There is nothing for my birthday, only work. I only know that I am one year older. That's all."

An eighty-three-year-old elder: "I am 83. My children have all married and separated from the household. I farm three mu alone. Photographer, tell me, how many more years can I live? For decades I have never seen electric light. I have no money to string electric wire. Photographer, don't photograph me; I have no money."

Tax burden: The lecture lists 33 types of taxes and fees borne by peasants, including agricultural tax, village retention fees, cultivated-land occupation fees, land-contract tax, education surcharge, family-planning fees, child immunization fees, school-construction fundraising, cooperative medical fees, forest-cutting approval fees, and livestock epidemic-prevention fees.

六、当代艺术需要大情怀 VI. Contemporary Art Needs a Larger Human Feeling

艺术产品如果不能够感动人们、振奋人们、警醒人们;如果艺术没有明确的表现观点,不能够给人们带来认知,而是一味强调它的不可知性,那么艺术就没有存在的价值。

我们艺术家要明确地表现,我们艺术家要有人类大的情怀,我们的作品要让人们得到思想的信息。我们需要明确地传递,我们自己首先需要有思想、有能量、有表现,我们需要勇敢,我们需要承担,我们要感知,我们要宣扬。

在人类的伟大多变的时代中,我们艺术家只是一个传播者。我们是人,是人类的一份子,我们没有资格脱离民众的认知,把自己高挂于民众之外。

If an art product cannot move people, inspire people, or awaken people; if art has no clear point of expression and cannot bring people understanding, but only insists on its own unknowability, then art has no value in existing.

We artists must express clearly. We artists must have a larger human feeling. Our works must allow people to receive information of thought. We need to transmit clearly. We ourselves must first have thought, energy, and expression. We need courage; we need to take responsibility; we must perceive, and we must proclaim.

In humanity's great and ever-changing age, we artists are only transmitters. We are human beings, part of humanity. We have no right to detach ourselves from the cognition of the people, or to place ourselves high above them.
