Hou Yimin field words, transcribed

English Translation

On the afternoon of Christmas Day in 2003, I met a peasant woman in Group 1, Fushou Village, Huaiyuan Town, Chongqing, Sichuan. She had been beaten by people from the land administration office until her nose bled. When she saw me photographing in the fields, she came to find me. She was disabled and could not speak clearly in front of me. I could only hear her crying, a cry coming from the bottom of her heart.

It was getting dark, and I was ready to leave, but I wanted to go to her home and hear what had happened. Her family lived in about 40 square meters. It was very dark. In one room there was a pigsty, and beside it a small bed. She said it was where her daughter slept. It was too dark, and I had not brought a flash, so I could not photograph it.

After returning to where I was staying, I still wanted to go back, so I took a lamp and went again. By then her daughter had come home: Wang Sha, a second-year junior middle school student at Huaiyuan Town Middle School in Chongqing, Sichuan. She was fourteen years old, such a good child. When she saw me, she cried, because one year of school cost RMB 700, while the family's annual income was RMB 1,000, earned by her father digging and selling sand from the riverbed.

The family wanted to raise more pigs, so they built a small pigsty beside the road. Her mother was beaten until her nose bled, and the pigsty was destroyed. I asked how much the pigsty was worth. The mother said 50 yuan and kept crying. I advised them not to get angry, because anger would only harm their own bodies; I told them not to quarrel with officials, because they would suffer the loss. I gave them RMB 100 and suggested that they find another place to rebuild a pigsty.

I truly wished I could give this little girl the money she needed for school, but I did not have it with me. I hoped that my work could help more children go to school...

English Preface

2555 Days Witness of Peasants

Preface

Time is flying, as always
Details embody the reality in art
On the speeches’ lies
I raise my camera
To still the history

Chinese peasants are the biggest human group in the world. They would be my eternal theme as a photographer.

Registering Chinese peasants with my camera is one of my dreams. This is a dream that I did not fulfill when I was an internship in a press more than a decade ago. As a free Chinese photographer, despite the danger and fatigue, I always feel lucky and satisfied to spend seven years with the peasants, and to shoot with my spirit. For this is a mission given by my soul.

For the seven-year period starting from June 1997, I visited and shot 16 backcountries in Sichuan and Chongqing, China. They are Tongjiang, Dachuan, Langzhong, Neijiang, Zizhong, Jianyang, Xinjin, Dayi,Chongqing, Ya’an, Wuling, Youyang, Fuling, Pengchuan and Hechuan. Without any governmental auspice, and faced with tremendous challenges, I managed to obtain an in-depth contact with the grass-root peasant families. Through chats and communications with them, I have taken 500 rolls of film, had and recorded 300 hours of voice interviews. This was accomplished in my individual plan for the first time through my independent observation and with my self-raised fund. I was inspired by the events before my camera which have made my goal steadfast.

From time to time, I was touched by the plight of the folks. I have recorded the story of a largest population group in the world — the Chinese peasants, the story of their real life. Though they are large in number, they are weak in power, since they were in a state of disunity, just like a sheet of loose sand. They include the old men who suffered pains of diseases and could do nothing but wait to die at home; the malnourished children who had no money for school; the peasant construction workers who received no pay from the contractors and an 84-year-old woman who cultivated six mu (or 1/15 of a hectare) of land by herself and who was bent down with the heavy work….

Rodin’s remarks:

Sometimes it may cost great effort only to express a little part of what the artist thinks and feel, if those who take a sceptical attitude realize this they will not wonder any more whether the spirit plainly expressed in the picture is what the artist wants to display out of conscience.
For when he dyes the material world with this ideal he aroused myriads of feeling in audience’s mind. He makes them discover their spiritual treasure that they have never realized before. He teaches them to love life with new reasons and light the way with new inner brightness.
