Certificate. Hou Yimin was born in 1964 in Harbin into an intellectual family. After transferring from the army, he studied in the Photography Department of Beijing Film Academy. In the early 1980s, he spent six years photographing wild giant pandas in Sichuan's primeval forests. As the first person to photograph wild giant pandas and one of China's earliest wildlife photographers, he was awarded the honor of lifelong photographer by the United Nations World Wide Fund for Nature, and in 1990 received an honorary fellowship from the Nature Group of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain. His works have been highly praised by experts in the field of world photography.
During the 29th Olympic Games in 2008, at the request of people from many circles, 13 works by Mr. Hou Yimin were exhibited in the Image Exhibition Hall of the 2008 Beijing International Press Center. The works fully reflect the natural state of the “national treasure,” the giant panda, living in the wild, and demonstrate the photographer's refined artistic skill. They had no clear social identity, lived in the valley, reclaimed land, survived through their own labor, and raised children there. Hou photographed or filmed the group across several Spring Festivals. One child caught a cold, and hospitalization at a nearby hospital cost about 1,000 yuan; Hou carried his camera to the hospital to interview and filmed substantial material about the hospital, family pressure, and survival conditions. Artist-confirmed: after this camera-led intervention, later medical visits for the child became much cheaper, costing only a few dozen yuan. Because their life was extremely remote, Hou once bought two wolf pups for them to raise, while keeping the principle of avoiding changes to their original way of life as much as possible. This should be archived as an independent rural-survival project alongside the Chinese Farmers series, documentary projects, and social-history research.

In one village, he found an eighty-plus-year-old blind woman living with her thirteen-year-old granddaughter, stayed for a month, and filmed in their home every day. The elder had married into the village because of two steamed buns; later, poverty drove her daughter-in-law away, leaving the granddaughter with the elder. The film is not yet completed and is suitable for global collaboration with documentary institutions, universities, foundations, post-production teams, subtitling partners, and international distributors.

1997 年中国四川成都国际熊猫节期间,邮电部发行“中国四川成都 '97 国际熊猫节电话 IC 卡”成套产品。一套四张,四张卡面全部采用侯一民拍摄的野生大熊猫照片;艺术家档案说明总面值 200 元,销售价 240 元,发行约 300 万套,成都大街小巷电话亭曾张贴相关宣传海报。这条证据说明熊猫作品进入国家发行级通信产品和城市公共传播,不只是画册或展览中的作品。During the 1997 International Panda Festival in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, China's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued a set titled Telephone IC Card of International Panda Festival '97 Chengdu Sichuan China. The set contained four cards, and all four card-face images used wild giant panda photographs by Hou Yimin. According to the artist's archive, the set had a total face value of RMB 200, a recorded sale price of RMB 240, and an issue volume of approximately three million sets; related promotional posters were posted on telephone booths across Chengdu. This evidence shows the panda works entering state-issued telecommunications products and urban public circulation, not only books or exhibitions.

One of the representative works of Chinese Peasants. The original archive interview records that her husband worked with a construction crew in Beijing, did not earn any money for a year, and instead owed the contractor food and lodging costs. He fell ill and wanted to return home, but the family had no money to send him. This large close-up portrait of a peasant mother holding twins won the Non-Spot News Photography Award that year and was published across the full front page of People's Photography News. After publication, People's Photography News launched a nationwide search for the mother. She was later found, and a donation ceremony was held; many readers donated money, and People's Daily and People's Photography News found her again and delivered the donations to her.
2000 Days in the Forest
